FAQ

As long as you are able to meet the conditions of your benefit for the number of hours you are required to engage in activity to help you find work, you can volunteer as many hours as you like outside of these.

If you volunteer but haven’t told your benefits office DWP about this you should talk to them to ensure that your volunteering does not affect the conditions related to your welfare benefit.

We also recommend that you tell the volunteer officer or supervisor that you are claiming benefits, especially if there is a chance your situation could change at short notice, for example if you are seeking paid work.

We would like all our volunteers to be able to develop their knowledge and learn new skills. All volunteers can expect an induction when starting their role and there will be opportunities to refresh your knowledge throughout your time volunteering with Dr Bell’s. Training and development will be discussed as part of your support and feedback sessions. If a learning need is identified, the volunteer’s supervisor will discuss this further. A record of your training will be kept in your personal record.

We all need to take time away and we encourage our volunteers to take regular breaks and holidays. If you plan to take time off, please let us know as far in advance as possible. You can also negotiate a longer period of time out of volunteering and request that your involvement be put “on hold”.

It depends on the motivations and reasons you have chosen to volunteer. Volunteering is
a great way to use your existing skills or further your skills and knowledge, as well as
meet new people and gain confidence. And, it is also a good addition to your CV.

All roles will involve an informal chat so you can find out more about Dr Bell’s and what the
opportunity involves. It’s also a great opportunity for us to get to know you a bit better!

For more information about volunteering with us or any other questions you may have, please contact our Volunteer Officer on vicki@dbfc.org.uk or call 0131 553 0100
